Auckland Castle Trust

Auckland Castle Trust is currently in the ‘hard hat’ phase of a £70m project, designed to transform Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland, into an arts, faith and heritage destination of international significance.

This includes the restoration of 900 year-old Auckland Castle – once a private palace for the Prince Bishops of Durham, as well as the creation of a brand new Mining Art Gallery, Spanish Gallery, Faith Museum, Walled Garden with restaurant and Welcome Building.

Combined with open air spectacular Kynren – An Epic Tale of England, run by our sister charity, Eleven Arches, and a variety of other activities ongoing in Bishop Auckland, this could attract more than 430,000 visitors a year by 2020 and boost the local economy by an estimated £20m per annum.

Auckland Castle Trust is exhibiting at DL Expo to give business from across the region a chance to learn more about these Future Plans and how the charity is working to revitalise Bishop Auckland by using local companies for construction, creating opportunities for jobs, apprenticeships and skills development and partnering with other organisations to encourage engagement.
